Activities of Indian Academy of Yoga & Yoga Sadhana Kendra
The followings are the brief review of the activities in the field of Yoga at this University:
(A) Training and education in the field of Yoga: The yoga Sadhana Kendra started a certificate course for better living in the year 1972 this course is of one month duration and it organized three times per year and in each course girls and boys numbering 300 to 400 trained.
(B) Diploma in Yoga: The Yoga Sadhana Kendra, B.H.U has started this course in 1975 and which is a four months course where each time 100 students are taken. At end of one course two theory papers namely - Paper 1 is foundation of Yoga and Yoga down the ages and paper 2 consist of yoga for health and contemporary Yoga are included.
(C) Yoga Unit in Department of Physical Education: There is a small division in department of physical education, Faculty of Arts where Yogic aspect of theory and practical is demonstrated to the B.P.E. (Bachelor of Physical Education) and M.P.E. (Master of Physical Education), number of students on Yogic aspect ranges from 150 to 200 per year in both groups.
(D) Yoga Research: For yoga research following things have been established -
(D1) Yoga Research Laboratory: It is located in the faculty of Ayurveda where all biochemical hermatological and immunological tests are being performed for patents as well as experimental animals in Yogic model of research. Up till now a large number of students have completed Ph.D. work in yoga in addition to Yogic research project for M.D. (Doctor of Medicine), Master of surgery and Doctor of Medicine in Ayurveda have been completed.
(D2) Research Publications: The Banaras Hindu University has contributed immensely in various field of yoga in last four decades. The field includes the experimental study of various Hathyogic postures Pranayama clinical study on effect of yoga in managing hypertension, Bronchial Asthama, Early renal failure, Various physiological disorders, Mental retardation etc. the work has been presented more than 3 Dozen national and international conferences on yoga allied specialty.
(D3) Research Project on Yoga: The various research projects conducted by various faculty members in the field of Yoga have contributed immensely in field of Yoga. Few important research projects are -

(D4) Ph.D./MD Thesis conducted in the field of Yoga: The faculty members are involved in guiding / conducting research leading to professional degrees such as Ph.D./MD/MS/MD (Ay) in various yoga and allied field including Yoga therapy.
(E) Patient Care Programme:
(E1) Yoga OPD: The yoga OPD was established in OPD block of S.S. Hospital in March 1980 where patents of various diseases like Hypertension, Bronchial asthama, Allergy, Skin diseases, Early renal Failure, Anxiety, Neurosis etc. were treated by an expert Yogi Mr. R.M. Shettiwar. He served as a main Yogi for the treatment i.e. Yoga therapy. Recently OPD has been started in old Ayurvedic building.
(E2) Yoga Ward: Few of the faculty members have conducted research project where patient required to admitted in the hospital. The funding agency gave the provision of few beds (10 beds) as a yoga ward which was established for the project. The principal investigator who conducted the indoor project were -
1. Late Prof. K.N. Udupa, Former Director and Rector of Banaras Hindu University.
2. Prof. R.H. Singh, Former Dean, Faculty of Ayurvedic, Vice Chancellor of Rajasthan Ayurvedic University.
3. Prof. R.G. Singh, Professor, Department of Nephrology and Secretary General, Indian Academy of Yoga, Banaras Hindu University.
(F) Publication of Books, Journal and Monograph in the field of Yoga:
The faculty members of the university are involved in scientific publication in the field of yoga for last 4 decades. This can be divided in the following heading:-
(F1) Journal: The Indian academy of yoga is contributing a quarterly Journal “Yoga Review” in the field of yoga since its inception. The field covered in the journal includes philosophy, psychological practice and various other allied subjects related to Yoga Journal as entitled "Yoga Review".
(F2) Year Book of Yoga: This is also publication of Indian academy of yoga which gives the details of academy and name and address of it fellows and members in addition to details of academy etc.
(F3) Books and Monographs: The faculty members involved in various aspects of Yoga have published more than a dozen books and monographs of Yoga.
(G) Indian Academy of Yoga:
The Indian academy of yoga which was established in 1981 with head quarter at BHU had following objectives.
To study scientifically and to evaluate critically the potential of yoga and allied traditions for the modern age and to reorient its study teaching practice and development with a view to build a stabler less careworn and happier human society.
To undertake all such activities necessary for promotion of the above objective such as:
- Organization of Conferences / Seminars / Symposia popular discourses/ Technical lectures in the field of yoga.
- Promotion of classes/courses in yoga on a scientific basis.
- Publication of journals, books, proceedings of conferences etc. incorporating original research, review articles, commentaries on tests etc. In the field of Yoga.
- Establishment of libraries, reading rooms etc in the field of yoga.
- Cooperation with institutions and academics in India and abroad interested in yoga and allied disciplines, and
- Extension of advice and assistance to government and other bodies in matters pertaining to yoga.
The Head quarter of the academy is located at Malaviya Bhawan. The one of the main published journal entitled "Yoga Review" which is a quarterly publication with contribution from authors from India and abroad in various field of yoga.

(I) REGIONAL CHAPTERS OF IAY:
Presently the following three regional chapters of IAY are active-
A) UP CHAPTERS:
It is coordinated by Dr. Amarjeet Yadav, working as Faculty of Yoga in Lucknow University. The chapter has organized about half dozen guest lectures form imminent experts, demonstration and actively collaborated in the conduction of training programme in yoga at Lucknow University. The chapter has organized annual meeting at Lucknow on Nov. 30th Dec. 1st 2007, which was attended by more than 200 delegates.
B) RAJASTHAN CHAPTERS:
Its head quarter is at Kota headed by Dr. G.P. Mathur. The chapter is regularly organizing short courses, training programmes for the beginners and group discussion to popularize the yoga for the better life. The chapter has acquired a regular office space at the Kota.
C) PONDICHERRY CHAPTERS:
Dr. Meenakshi Devi Bhawnani and Dr. Anand Balyogi are actively involved in popularizing yoga in this part of the country. In collaboration with ICYER, Pondicherry the chapter is actively involved in promoting academic yoga. They are regularly publishing the Hournal and Scientific Articles.
The Indian Academy of Yoga is a learned society involved in betterment of yoga at National level. The IAY will have its global share in promotion of yoga which is the only way to solve many problems of modern age. We pray the greatest yogi of the Universe, Lord Vishwanath whose abode is Kashi, to bless the academy and its members in the current era of modernization and changing values of life so that the world moves from darkness to light and mortal to immortal.

(K)FELLOWSHIP OF ACADEMY
The Fellowship of the Academy is conferred as per merit of the Candidate, his involvement in practice & promotion of yoga in India and aboard. The credential Committee decides about the names for award.
